During a debate in the Scottish Parliament on supporting the people of Afghanistan, Scottish Conservative and Unionist MSP Pam Gosal raised the plight of Afghan Women and Girls who are now at the mercy of Taliban rule.
Welcoming the UK Government’s commitment to resettle 20,000 Afghan refugees in the UK, most notably interpreters and other individuals who have helped UK armed forces, Pam also welcomed the fact that people whose lives were deemed to be threatened by the Taliban are being offered indefinite leave to remain in the UK.
Even before the crisis the UK had taken in more than 36,000 Afghans since 1996.
In an emotional debate, the Scottish Conservative and Unionist MSP referenced the stories of women burning their diplomas and degree certificates to hide the fact that they were educated. She asked members to imagine that it was their daughter desperately concealing her education to avoid extreme punishment.
Pam said she was confident that Scotland would play its part in helping to respond to the crisis.
